Pacquiao vs. Marquez: No Odds or Line Is Worth Betting on Dinamita
Dec 2nd 2012, 04:11

If you are planning on placing a bet on the big Dec. 8 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez this week, it would be smart to avoid betting on Marquez.

The two have met in the ring three times before and they have been some of the closest fights of the past decade.

While the first ended in a draw, the other two matches came to a decision with Pacquiao ending up on top.

This trend will only continue after the fourth contest in this rivalry.

Marquez has been great throughout his career, but he has never been able to win against the elite competition. Although it is little to be ashamed of, he has an 0-3-1 combined record against Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

One primary reason for these struggles is his lack of elite speed to match his technique. At 39 years old, that ability has only gotten worse.

In the last fight against Pacquiao, Dinamita was able to throw 436 punches. This was 142 less than his opponent over the course of the match, according to BoxingScene.com.

Even though Marquez was able to land at a higher percentage, he did much less damage and it showed up on the scorecard.

Then when it came to power punches, he could not stay with Pac-Man and was only able to land 39 percent compared to the 43 percent by his competition.

A year later, both fighters have aged a bit, but Pacquiao still has the speed to stay ahead in the match.

The other problem that Marquez could have is the increased focus from the former champ. Pacquiao admits that his head was not completely on the fights in previous matches.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, the Filipino star discussed the adjustments he has made:

These past fights, I’ve been involved in different lines of work. There’s entertainment, TV hosting and politics. I lost my focus in training...I will be focusing more on training for this fight even to the extent of killing myself at the training camp.

If he is truly completely intent on winning this fight, Marquez might not have a chance.

Pacquiao is incredibly tough to knockout, as he has only lost twice in his career due to a stoppage, and never since 1999.

This means that the Mexican will have to win on points, and that does not seem likely. He is likely to be severely outnumbered in the amount of punches landed and he does not have the ability to cause too much damage on his opponent.

In addition, the judges have certainly favored Pacquiao in these matchups, and that is unlikely to change in this one.

While this match is likely to be close with these highly competitive fighters, Pacquiao will once again come out on top like he has so many times throughout his career.

By Dan Ambrose: In a perfect WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) would be the one that ends up meeting WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the ring on May 4th next, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen judging by the way Canelo chose not to speak [...]

Cotto vs. Trout Results: What Massive Win Means for Austin Trout
Dec 2nd 2012, 04:39

Austin Trout has passed the first major test of his boxing career. By upsetting Miguel Cotto to retain his WBA light middleweight title in New York on Saturday night, the American rising star should open up bigger opportunities for himself moving forward.

When you consider Cotto's last two losses came against Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., Trout is putting himself in some pretty elite company. It's by far the most important victory of his career at this point.

The 27-year-old southpaw has been working his way up the ranks for quite some time now. He picked up his first professional victory over Justo Almazan back in 2005 and has tallied 25 more wins in a row since.

An undefeated streak like that will always get a boxer noticed, but it takes a marquee victory in order to take his popularity to another level. Beating Cotto should accomplish that for Trout, who originally beat Rigoberto Alvarez to win the light middleweight title.

There were questions entering the fight about how Trout would handle the moment. After all, it's common for fighters to suffer a letdown when placed in a high-pressure situation like he was in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd.

Given Cotto's track record and experience in those type of bouts, it's no surprise he was the favorite. But Trout didn't back down from the spotlight, fought within himself and it resulted in a victory that will surely be noticed by the boxing world.

By proving he could go toe-to-toe with one of the most well-known boxers in the world right now, he showed that his undefeated record isn't a fluke even though the level of competition had been relatively low.

It's just the beginning, however. He must capitalize on the win by setting up another big fight against a top competitor in the light middleweight division. He can't afford to take on another subpar opponent and get lost in the shuffle again.

Now that he's beaten Cotto and illustrated his ability to perform in front of a wide audience, the next couple of fights are crucial. Fans are going to start paying closer attention. A couple of more big wins and the Trout bandwagon will start to fill up.

In other words, he's taken one big step. But there's a lot of work left to do for the American.

Cotto vs. Trout Results: No Doubt Defeats Junito Via Unanimous Decision
Dec 2nd 2012, 04:45

Austin "No Doubt" Trout scored the biggest win of his boxing career on Saturday night by defeating Miguel Cotto. Until now, Trout was considered a good fighter, but he hadn't captured a signature win, and thus, had not become a household name in the sport.

That all changed on Saturday night. It was Trout's fourth defense of his WBA light-middleweight title, and the win denied Cotto's attempt to claim his fifth world title.

Trout remains undefeated, moving to 26-0 in his career after dispatching the future Hall of Famer. Cotto's record declines to 37-4, and this now makes him a loser in two consecutive fights.

It is unclear what this latest setback will mean for him moving forward, but Trout's future just got a lot brighter. Trout now seems like a possible contender for Saul Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and possibly even Sergio Martinez.

Those fights would likely have to happen at middleweight, but it is certainly feasible now.

Cotto is a proud Puerto Rican fighter, but he must ask himself if he's been in a few too many wars. The toll fights with Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito (twice), Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather have taken on him seems apparent.

Cotto is just 32 years old, but he's been fighting professionally for 11 years. His style generally puts him in line to expect punishment. After a while, that slows down any fighter.

It's obvious that these two fighters are headed in opposite directions now.

Trout pulls off unanimous upset vs. Cotto
Dec 2nd 2012, 04:07

Austin Trout told us he'd have to knock out Miguel Cotto to insure a win in the main event on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Turns out he just needed to box smartly, and use his mobility and superior athleticism to get the better of Cotto, now 7-1 at MSG. The judges, all credit to them, didn't let Cotto's status in New York influence them; they scored it 119-109, 117-111, 117-111, for Trout, a New Mexico boxer who defended his WBA 154-pound crown.
