Broner's stock drops with unimpressive win over Malignaggi
Jun 23rd 2013, 05:29

By Dan Ambrose: We found out tonight that Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO's) isn't going to be the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. We also found out that he couldn't even conclusively beat what many boxing fans felt was the weakest of the welterweight champions in WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO's). Broner got [...]

Adrien Broner is the NOT THE NEXT BIG THING
Jun 23rd 2013, 06:23

By Hector Gonzalez: After tonight's fight, Adrien Broner vs Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner failed to prove that he is boxing's next big thing. My scorecard is as follows; rounds 1-5, 10 for Malignaggi and rounds 6-9, 11 & 12 for Broner, which would technically be a draw. I believe that some rounds could have gone [...]

Adrien Broner and Paulie Malignaggi Continue Trash Talk After The Problem's Win
Jun 23rd 2013, 05:10

Move over Floyd Mayweather, there's a new brash titleholder in the welterweight division, and his name is Adrien Broner

The 23-year-old rising star defeated WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on Saturday night via split decision, but the end of the fight didn't end the animosity between the two. As Golden Boy Promotions tweeted out, Broner had no issues kicking a little dirt on his opponent after the win:

Malignaggi, who hugged Broner after the fight before the scorecards were read, took exception to the comments by Broner and approached him as the two once again engaged in a war of words.

The fight itself was an intriguing match that was difficult to score.

Malignaggi was the much more active fighter. According to SHOStats, he threw nearly 850 punches over the course of the 12-round fight. However, Broner was the much more efficient puncher, consistently landing power shots.

The two engaged in plenty of trash talk in the buildup of the fight, with both trying to get under each other's skin. Broner even went personal in the pre-fight buildup, calling Malignaggi's ex-girlfriend during a pre-fight press conference

With the win already in tow and Malignaggi's respect earned, Broner decided that it was a good time to bring up the sore topic for his opponent once again. All while taking the time to bring up his performance too, saying Malignaggi couldn't hit him, per Ryan Maquinana of BoxingScene:

Through Broner's rise to stardom he's often been compared to Floyd Mayweather for his impressive hand speed, power and defense. It appears he's also set on doing his best to create a controversial persona like the pound-for-pound champion.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Adrien Broner's Possible Opponents After Win Over Paul Malignaggi

Adrien Broner's Possible Opponents After Win Over Paul Malignaggi
Jun 23rd 2013, 04:52

After what seemed like an eternity of verbal back and forth between Paul Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, the 147-pounders finally put their mouth guards in and let their gloves do the talking as they battled over the WBA Welterweight Championship...then the mouth guards came out and the war of words continued, looked at like so by Twitter users:

Either way, Broner was able to cement his name with rare company as he won the title over Malignaggi in the epic encounter, but now as the pointed words between these two fade into the past, "The Problem" will look for another fight.

According to boxing promoter Richard Schaefer, via Michael Woods of ESPN.com, there are a ton of potential opponents for Broner, who has been dubbed "The Next Big Thing in Boxing." One of the first names Schaefer threw out was Marcos Maidana

Maidana is a light welterweight who has a professional record of 34-3 with 31 of his wins coming from KO. Maidana's last fight came against Josesito Lopez, in which Maidana scored a sixth-round TKO victory to retain his WBA International Welterweight Championship.

Other names tossed around include the winner of the Andre Berto-Jesus Soto Karass bout, Amir "King" Khan, Devon Alexander "The Great" and even veteran "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who is coming off a comeback victory over Pablo Cano. All of them would be great matchups for the lightning-quick, Floyd Mayweather clone Broner

Schaefer discussed the possibility of Broner taking on the winner of a possible Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse battle, which is still in the works, describing it as a "good fit for Broner."

One fight that we won't see unfortunately (at least not yet) is the dream matchup of Adrien Broner and his "Big Bro," Floyd "Money" Mayweather.

Not only is it a little early in Broner's career, at just 23 years of age, for him to face his mentor, but Broner has said it's a fight he doesn't want. He told Woods of ESPN.com that Mayweather is his role model and admitted that Money is boxing's "top dog."

Broner did put his Adrien Broner spin on it, though, and added "I want my big bro to retire undefeated. I don't want to hand him a loss."

But if you watched the Broner-Malignaggi bout, it appears that Schaefer won't have a say in who Broner fights. Broner said in the post-match interview that he wants the fans to pick his next opponent.

Whether that happens or not is yet to be seen, but one thing is sure: Broner put on a great show, earned a new championship belt and will have a ton of people chasing him down to take it away.

Broner vs. Malignaggi: The Problem Defeats The Magic Man
Jun 23rd 2013, 04:40

Adrien "The Problem" Broner (27-0, 22 KO) defeated Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi (32-5) by split decision and took his WBA welterweight championship at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Here are the official scorecards, per BoxRec.com:

Glenn Feldman 115-113, Tom Miller 113-115 and Tom Schreck 117-111.

Schreck's scorecard was purely ridiculous, but ultimately the right fighter won the fight.

It was a difficult fight to score because Malignaggi was the far busier fighter. This tweet from the ShoStats official Twitter account shows the disparity in punches thrown:

By winning, Broner became a champion in his third weight class. At only 23 years old, The Problem has set himself up for bigger and better things. The fight clearly wasn't as easy for Broner as many expected.

The Magic Man had his moments, but his Achilles' heel is his lack of power.

Malignaggi had the hometown crown behind him, and he had a decent game plan, but he didn't have the power or energy to successfully employ it.

The 32-year-old tried to outwork Broner with pitty-pat punches to the body, but Malignaggi's lack of power made the shots less than effective. Though he scored early, the shots didn't take anything out of Broner.

Toward the middle of the fight, Malignaggi's pace began to slow and Broner increased his work rate. During the fight, Broner's punches were the most effective throughout the night. That factor won him the fight.

After the fight was over, more of the below-the-belt trash talk from Broner continued. During an interview with Showtime's Jim Gray, The Problem said: "I left here with his belt and his girl."

Malignaggi became incensed, and the two had to be separated. It was a fitting end to a bizarre fight saga that was highlighted by an entertaining bout.

Broner beats Malignaggi via split decision
Jun 23rd 2013, 04:50

Brooklyn-bred Paul Malignaggi promised he would take Adrien Broner into deep waters, and test him during the buildup to his Saturday night clash and in a faceoff between pound for pound top ten trash-talkers. That he did; but the WBA welter champ Malignaggi has to be content with a moral victory, because the judges at Barclays Center gave Broner a split decision win. Malignaggi boxed super smart, and out-threw the Cinci boxer, 843 to 524. But Broner had a power edge, 418-376, and Broner's right hand, and left hook, which snapped Paulie's head back and sprayed his sweat into the lights, delighted two of three judges.

What was Kovalev's rationale?
Jun 23rd 2013, 01:28

Ultimately, light heavyweight contender Sergey Kovalev elected to challenge titlist Nathan Cleverly rather than press for a higher-profile mandatory shot against Bernard Hopkins. To some, it might sound like the wrong decision. Why would Kovalev agree to go to Cleverly's home country of Wales on Aug. 17 to face a titleholder in his prime rather than stay in the United States, where the Russian Kovalev is now based, and face the 48-year-old Hopkins, who can't defy Father Time forever and who is a much bigger name than Cleverly ever will be?

Broner will have 15 days to decide which title to keep if he beats Malignaggi
Jun 22nd 2013, 23:28

(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: If Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO's) gets past WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO's) later tonight, he'll have 15 days to make a decision about which of his titles – the WBC lightweight or WBA welterweight – to keep, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. If [...]
